Sciatica Treatment

medical illustration of inflamed sciatic nerve

Sciatica commonly refers to pain that travels from the low back or buttock into the leg due to irritation of a nerve in the lower spine. Symptoms may also include numbness, tingling, or weakness. Because several conditions can produce similar symptoms, treatment begins with an examination to help identify the likely source.

Depending on the findings, conservative treatment may include chiropractic manipulation or mobilization, exercise, activity recommendations, soft tissue treatment, traction, or spinal decompression. Not every patient with sciatica requires the same treatment, and care should be adjusted according to the patient's response.

When symptoms suggest that imaging, medication management, injection, surgical consultation, or another form of treatment may be appropriate, we can coordinate referral to another healthcare provider.
