Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression is a form of motorized traction that applies controlled, gradual traction forces to the lumbar spine. At Advanced Chiropractic & Massage, it may be considered for selected patients with low back pain, disc-related symptoms, or sciatica when the history and examination suggest that traction may be appropriate.

Treatment is performed using a Chattanooga Triton programmable traction system, allowing treatment settings to be adjusted according to the patient's condition, comfort, and response to care. Spinal decompression is generally used as one component of a broader conservative treatment plan and may be combined with chiropractic care, exercise, activity recommendations, or other appropriate treatment.

Is Spinal Decompression Right for Everyone?

No. Spinal decompression is not appropriate for every type of back pain, and research on lumbar traction and decompression has produced mixed results. For that reason, we use it selectively rather than recommending it routinely for every patient with low back pain or sciatica.

Treatment recommendations are based on the patient's symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and response to care. When the history or examination suggests that additional evaluation may be appropriate, we can obtain digital X-rays when clinically indicated or coordinate MRI, specialist evaluation, injections, surgical consultation, or other care.
