Neck Pain Treatment

Painful neck ache after fender bender car crash

Neck pain can arise from the joints, muscles, discs, nerves, or other structures of the cervical spine and surrounding tissues. Symptoms may develop gradually, follow repetitive activity, or occur after an injury such as a motor vehicle collision or workplace accident. Some patients also experience headaches, shoulder pain, stiffness, or symptoms extending into the arm.

Treatment begins with a history and examination to help identify the likely source of the problem and determine whether conservative care is appropriate. Depending on the findings, treatment may include chiropractic manipulation or mobilization, lower-force techniques, soft tissue treatment, exercise, and activity or ergonomic recommendations. Treatment is individualized according to the patient's condition, comfort level, goals, and response to care.

How Is Neck Pain Treated?

Many cases of mechanical neck pain can initially be managed with conservative care. The treatment approach may change as symptoms, movement, and function improve. If the patient is not responding as expected, the diagnosis and treatment plan should be reconsidered rather than simply continuing the same care indefinitely.

When symptoms or examination findings suggest significant nerve involvement, spinal cord involvement, fracture, or another condition requiring additional evaluation, digital X-rays, MRI, specialist evaluation, medication management, physical therapy, injections, or surgical consultation may be appropriate.
